Kevin is a fiber artist with academic training and professional experience in textiles, product design, and business. She straddles the controversial art and craft divide. She creates artwork and works with artisans around the world in areas of design, enterprise development, and market access. Kevin has worked with over 1,200 artisans in Mali, Haiti, India, Peru, and the United States. She believes in the power of art and craft to raise our standard of living and advance cross-cultural understanding, both from the consumer and the producer point of view (or the patron/collector and artist point of view, in words from the art world).
In her art, she is interested in concepts of culture, identity, and memory. She uses textile processes such as embroidery and weaving and found materials to create artworks that explore and reference cultural and personal identity. Her artwork is influenced by over twenty years of living and working abroad throughout Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. She is fascinated by the social cues that traditional textiles and garments communicate within unique communities and social groups.
In her craft sector development work she is interested in traditional craft processes around the world and their connection to the global marketplace. Environmental stewardship is important to Kevin and she has a special interest in goods made of recycled materials. She often uses everyday materials, including teabags and old photographs in her artwork. In her craft sector development work she values hand-made goods and strives to balance commerce with ethical and sustainable practices.
